A rare family of successful artistes

Father : Late Shri Bankim Kumar, a sitar artiste of the Inayat Khan gharana. He was a performer, composer and orchestra producer for All India Radio from 1949 to 1961, and gave many stalwarts of Indian classical music their first break on AIR.

 

Eldest sister : Manju BannerjeeSitar artiste of AIR Cuttack-Calcutta-Ranchi and a disciple of Professor Nikhil Bannerjee

 

Second sister  Namita Paul, disciple of Guru Kelu Charan Mahapatra and a regular performer as an Odissi dancer.

 

Brother in law Sitar artiste Pt Kartick Kumar, the senior-most disciple of sitar maestro Pt Ravi Shankar and a performer of international fame.

 

 

Aunt : Aparna Roy, Surbahar (ancient sitar-like instrument) player of AIR and disciple of Ustad Dabir Khan, Pt Birendra Kishore Roychoudhury and Professor Radhika Mohan Maitra. Aparna was also an esraj player and a painter at Shantiniketan during the days of Rabindranath Tagore. 

 

Daughter: Chandrima Pal, journalist and author (www.chandrimapal.com), married to Sumit Bhattacharya, journalist and blues-rock guitar player (www.summitattempt.in).
